As and A2 Art and Design
The department organises regular visits to galleries and exhibitions, both locally and nationally. These are an important part of the course, and are related to the work students are doing in their coursework. A London trip is usually organised in the Autumn Term.Students use artroom C13 mostly, and within this they can create their own workspace, which they can use outside lesson time to continue with work.
The department supplies most materials needed, though students may need to supplement this with their own materials where their specialism requires it.
Entry for AS/A2 modules will be dependent upon regular attendance, a commitment to the subject and successful performance in school-based assessments. The student must demonstrate that s/he is capable of fulfilling their realistic potential in that module. If this is not the case, the Head of Department should not enter the student for that module in that examination sitting. Students will be offered the opportunity to take that module at a later date. Should the student insist on taking the module in that sitting against the advice offered then it will be as a private candidate.
Entry Requirements
Students should normally have studied GCSE Art and Design and have achieved a grade C or above. However, in special circumstances, or where students have an interest in the subject or wishes to continue to a higher level or to employment exceptions can be made.
Students must show an interest in the subject, be able to work independently and demonstrate creativity and imagination.
Art at AS
The AS Art and Design consists of two units. Both are examined at the end of the course through a formal exhibition. The work is externally moderated.
At AS students are expected to work in an exploratory, inquisitive and experimental manner.
| Unit | %AS | %A2 |   |
| Coursework | 60 | 30 | Complete one coursework unit exploring the expressive qualities of materials and techniques, investigating the work of other artists |
| External Assignment | 40 | 20 | 6 weeks to develop and explore ideas and 8 hours to produce a final piece |
Art at A2
The A2 Art and Design consists of two units. Both are examined at the end of the course, through a formal exhibition. The work is externally moderated.
At A2 students are expected to work to a high standard on individual and focused study.
| Unit | %A2 |   |
| Coursework | 30 | Complete one coursework unit of practical work, which involves producing a written study relating to your practice |
| External Assignment | 20 | 6 weeks to develop and explore ideas, and 12 hours to produce a final piece of work |
There are many options following the completion of the course. Students may choose further study in a specialism of the Arts, or go into employment. The department has been very successful in recent years in both of these areas.
Students work is continuously reviewed and assessed during the period of the course, both informally and formally.
Most students will be entered for the unendorsed paper. However, Graphics, Textiles, and 3D Design course are also offered.
The majority of students who follow the course are successful, and results overall are always high, with a significant number continuing into higher education.
